Description:

MathTappers: Find Sums is a simple game designed to assist learners in comprehending addition (and subtraction) and then aid them in improving their accuracy and speed. For more information on all of our apps, please visit MathTappers.com.

For Parents:

The game offers two modes to support your child's gameplay. The first mode is tailored for younger learners and utilizes a grid with apples placed on it, where both apples and blank spaces can be easily counted. The objective is to select a pair of numbers that will fill all unshaded spaces with apples. The second mode employs a symbolic part-part-whole model intended for older learners to efficiently and accurately recognize addition and subtraction facts. In this mode, the goal is to pick two numbers that, when placed in the top spaces, add up to the value in the bottom space.

The focus should always be on sense-making and accuracy over speed. Encourage your child to explain how they determine the other number and the strategies they are using. Remember that this game is not meant to replace instruction but rather supplement it with self-paced activities to support mastery and fluency.

Mastering the concepts of addition and subtraction, as well as building fluency in recalling the basic associations presented in this game, are crucial for success in later mathematics. Fluency is an individual attribute, so challenge yourself with the game to gain an understanding of the fluency levels you can expect your child to achieve.

For Educators:

MathTappers: Find Sums has been designed to help learners master basic addition and subtraction facts with comprehension, as well as encourage them to continue playing in order to develop efficient strategies and improve their recall speed (fluency). This app does not rely on the use of flashcards but instead presents useful models that support learners in understanding addition and subtraction. Although the game appears to focus solely on addition, subtraction is an integral part of the activity and the learning process. Learners using this app develop a sense of the relationship between two addends and a sum, providing them with opportunities to master both addition and subtraction facts simultaneously. One cannot truly understand that 7+3=10 or 3+7=10 without also grasping the rest of the fact family, such as 10-7=3 and 10-3=7. Working with groups of fact families that share a common sum, like summation to 10, is expected to help learners make connections between these families and enhance their mastery process synergistically.
